Housing District Galgenbuck, Baden, 1st. Prize Competition

The Galgenbuck site is the last large development reserve of the city of Baden. This 15 hectare area, currently used for agriculture, is located on the southern edge of the city in the Baden-Dättwil district. The city of Baden sought a concept for a “high-quality, distinctive residential neighborhood.” The urban design concept envisions a quarter for around 1’500 residents and 300 workplaces.

The building typology positions itself between urban and rural forms. The buildings, embedded in the gentle topography, are grouped in an irregular row structure. These heterogeneous row structures allow the neighborhood to respond differently to its surroundings. To the north, the structure is open, enabling a simple access system and good connection to existing residential areas. To the west, curved structures and (semi-)private green spaces create a transition to the forest edge. To the east, more closed structures provide urban-integrated noise protection and connect to the Täfere employment area.

The ground-bound building typology particularly targets families. The compact building style achieves both a high density (floor area ratio 1.1) and a large proportion of private and public open spaces.
