Tram Region Bern, TP6
The “Tram Region Bern” project is one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the Bern metropolitan area and includes various extensions and improvements to the tram network. One of the subprojects is the extension of tram line 9 to Kleinwabern and its connection to the new S-Bahn stop “Kleinwabern”. The tram line, as a transport infrastructure (with stops, tracks, and overhead lines) and as an efficient mode of public transport, becomes a strong element of local identity.
Given the high development dynamics in the area—with numerous new construction and redevelopment projects—the enhancement of Seftigenstrasse as the backbone of Kleinwabern plays a key role. In the center of Wabern, the existing streetscape is retained. However, between the Grünau roundabout and the turning loop in Kleinwabern, operation, design, and the cross-section of the street change. The symmetrical street layout with a central zone and tram operation in mixed traffic is also reflected in the design approach.
The existing birch-lined avenue—currently a key identity feature of Seftigenstrasse—is replaced by a new tree-lined boulevard. The street space is transformed into an attractive public realm through generous cycling and pedestrian paths and small plaza-like spaces. Private forecourts of new developments are interwoven with the public street space, resulting in an optimal spatial and functional configuration.
