Wettingen Town Center

The municipality of Wettingen is located in the Limmat Valley and, with over 20’000 inhabitants, is a densely populated and green community in the canton of Aargau. The main road (Landstrasse) forms the backbone of the municipality. It serves as a residential and working area, shopping street, and traffic artery. However, it has lost some of its attractiveness due to increasing competition from other shopping options in the surrounding area. Together with the local population and a panel of experts, a master plan was developed to capture concerns and insights.

The further development of the master plan foresees creating a new identity for the town center through simple, immediately implementable measures in the public space. A new emphasis is also placed on traffic with the introduction of a central zone along the Landstrasse. Cross-connections to the neighborhoods are marked and strengthened by groups of trees. Medium- to long-term plans include densification with architectural highlights at strategic locations. The use and size of ground floors can flexibly respond to market demands. Needs-based, appealing illustrations provide inspiration for individual ideas. At the same time, the concept is clear and easy to understand.
