Landscape Concept Wettingen

Wettingen is a popular and attractive residential municipality in the Baden–Limmattal region. A key characteristic is its strong integration of green spaces. The label “garden city” is an important and positively connoted trademark of the municipality. The open space concept aims to demonstrate how this garden city character can be preserved and even strengthened despite inner urban densification.

The concept is based on precise coordination between buildings, street spaces, and private and public green areas. Four sub-strategies—neighborhoods, street spaces, open spaces, and open space connection corridors—govern the coordination of different topics across scales. At the municipal level, aspects such as the hierarchy and character of street spaces and the function of public green areas are defined. At the settlement level, the “Wettingen model” is developed, an integrated principle for urban development, open space, and access that serves as an identity-forming element for the many garden city neighborhoods. The model not only offers recommendations for dealing with front gardens and buildings, but also proposes solutions for parking spaces and neighborhood garages.
