Kreuzplatz, Aarau
The area east of Aarau’s city center is heavily impacted by transport infrastructure (railway, motorway access road, several cantonal roads). To improve the traffic situation, various ideas for new road tunnels are being considered. This study examined which tunnel and traffic solution would best enhance the urban quality of the eastern districts.
This enhancement concerns, on the one hand, better connectivity between neighborhoods and the reduction of the barrier effect caused by main roads. A key element is the redesign of the Kreuzplatz into an attractive urban hub for all modes of transport. In addition, a system of local and slow-traffic connections ensures an appealing internal network of pathways. On the other hand, the goal is to improve the conditions for the many development areas. Accordingly, traffic corridors should be transformed into attractive urban spaces that serve as gateways and points of identity for the adjacent neighborhoods. The development framework serves as a foundation for the continued traffic and urban planning of the area.
