Alte Landstrasse, Gamsen
The Alte Landstrasse in Gamsen is being enhanced and structured through a consistent design, a continuous pedestrian route and the highlighting of specific locations – the two village centres, East and West, with a design extending from façade to façade, and the historic village wall. This will create a more pleasant environment for residents, provide more ecologically valuable and landscaped areas, attractive paths through the village and a comfortable waiting area for the bus.
Along the southern, continuous pavement – which serves as a safe, longitudinal route for pedestrians – a wide band of natural stone is established along its entire length as a linear feature. This connects the two starting points in the west and east and, in the linear sections, functions as a gutter and a separation between the carriageway and the pavement. The dimensions of the standard cross-section (a 5.2-metre-wide carriageway and a 2.2-metre-wide pavement, of which 0.7 metres is formed as a gutter) are determined by the scenario of a bus and a car meeting, which can occur on the carriageway at low speed. In the event of two buses meeting, one vehicle must pull over onto the wide paved strip; there is no need to drive onto the intuitively recognisable pavement. Small rest areas are created at junctions with side streets. Where the perimeter allows, gravel areas are arranged at the sides, featuring individual benches and trees.
The bus stops are in the same locations as before and are easy to find. Thanks to their minimalist, small-scale architecture, the bus shelters blend harmoniously into the village setting. The dimensions are based on the minimum space required and avoid oversized structural interventions. At the same time, the open, lightweight construction allows these small-scale structures to blend well into the local townscape and landscape. All six bus shelters follow a consistent design approach, whilst site-specific adaptations – such as those required to accommodate higher passenger numbers – are possible where necessary.
