Urban District Klybeck, Basel

The reorganization, structuring, and hierarchy of the public urban spaces support an identity-forming further development of the renowned industrial and research area in Basel North. Over the past 130 years, the sites have continuously adapted to new production requirements. In this sense, the building tradition is to be preserved, and the core area should also allow dynamic developments in the future.

The former core area of Basel North’s industrial history emerges as an independent urban entity. By preserving individual buildings and through conversions, additions, and replacement new constructions, future-proof interim and new uses can be accommodated. The originally closed city is being opened up to the public. Therefore, the design and function of the urban space play a very important role. A dense network of squares, alleys, and paths provides access to the buildings and creates new connections to the Rhine promenade. The urban spaces give the district a recognizable appearance.

A main element of the urban and open space concept is the restoration of Horburg Park. As part of the densification of the Klybeck district, commercial uses are relocated to the surrounding areas. This allows Horburg Park to reappear in its full size. Along the waterfront, a high-quality promenade is created. Through the repurposing of the harbor area and densification of the industrial sites, a new city silhouette facing the water emerges.

Where the Rhine promenade meets the restored and historically developed neighborhood streets, a generous terrace is created with a new ship landing stage, public ground-floor uses, and space for recreational activities. The new urban spaces in the Klybeck area create a robust spatial framework for future changes and enable a distinctive external impact. New spaces and pathways are opened up for the local residents and employees.
