Regional Vision Bern-Mittelland
The Bern-Mittelland region, with an area of almost 1’000 km², is a very extensive functional space. It consists of 76 predominantly rural municipalities and has about 410’000 inhabitants. A defining feature is the strong contrast between urbanity and rurality. On one hand, there is the dynamic, densely built, urban core agglomeration of Bern; on the other, the spacious, diverse, and attractive natural and cultural landscape between the Mittelland and the Pre-Alps. With precise coordination of urban development and transport and a compact concentration of transport modes, this contrast becomes a quality. This enables a sustainable interaction between city and village, allowing the strengths of individual municipalities and areas to come to the fore.
