Viererfeld/Mittelfeld, Berne

The Viererfeld development area is located between the neighborhoods of Länggasse and Felsenau, just a few bus stops from Bern’s main railway station. Its elevated position above the Aare River offers unique views of the Alps and Bern’s historic old town.

The urban design proposes a dense and mixed-use city district that provides ideal conditions for diverse housing types, varied public spaces, and functional access infrastructure. The Engepromenade, framed by a clearly defined built edge, gives the neighborhood a distinctive character and a strong sense of identity. It is integrated into the concept as an urban green space.

Long north–south-oriented building blocks with generous courtyards ensure good sunlight exposure and an attractive living environment despite the high building density. The layout also allows for a very simple access system, enabling large car-free areas within the neighborhood.

In the area near the park, a series of east–west-oriented building ensembles creates a strong interweaving of urban and green spaces. As a result, each apartment faces both the green space and a communal courtyard. At the interface with the Länggasse and Felsenau neighborhoods, the plan ties in with existing special-use zones.
