Development Line Rheinstrasse, Bregenz

The main axis L202 Rheinstrasse (ADT 22’000 to 32’000) is one of the most important access routes to the city of Bregenz. However, the high traffic volume and lack of spatial definition prevent the street from functioning as an urban space. It is unattractive for pedestrians and cyclists, has few and poorly designed crossing points for local traffic, and offers no appealing public space. The buildings and high-quality uses (shops, offices) are increasingly turning away from the street.

The focus of the study was the creation of a so-called “High Street”—a compact, attractive, and identity-strong street space integrated into the urban area for cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and buses. The street space offers quality of stay and serves as a lively meeting and social place. The adjacent buildings play a central role in this. The concept demonstrated how new buildings can complement the existing development and enhance the entire corridor. In addition to defining building lines, entrances (orientation to the street), building heights, uses (ground and upper floors), and number of floors, principle designs were developed to address delivery logistics, integrated noise protection, and optimal sunlight exposure (for residential developments).
