Vision Main Access Roads, Frauenfeld

With the 2011 Settlement and Transport Structure Plan, the general route of the urban relief road was defined as a western bypass. However, the bypass only makes sense if accompanied by strong flanking measures along the existing main access roads. Through-traffic and most tangential traffic connections within the urban area are intended to be redirected via the bypass.

At the same time, the main access roads should be redesigned as attractive and direct routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. This aims to increase the share of these modes in local and origin-destination traffic compared to private motorized transport. Only then will significant relief of the city center be achievable.

Each access axis is given its own identity. Existing elements—such as the poplar avenue along Schaffhauserstrasse—are taken up and strengthened. Zürcherstrasse East is intended to evolve into a boulevard. The three key urban junctions will be designed as mobility hubs and neighborhood centers. They mark the transition from access roads to the inner-city street network. Street spaces in the city center will be treated and designed equally.

The developed core concepts present options both with and without the urban bypass. In the long term, integrating the Frauenfeld–Wil railway as a tram line within the urban area is also conceivable.
