High-rise development strategy, Frauenfeld
The height development concept for the city of Frauenfeld takes an unusual approach to building culture: high-rise buildings and tall buildings are only permitted as integral parts of new, carefully developed townscapes. There are no new tall buildings in the rest of the city. According to the cantonal construction rules, buildings taller than 17 m are already considered tall buildings.
The focus is on five specific urban areas – special, significant, distinctive, and complex. Here, strategically placed tall buildings are intended not only to set urban accents, but also to create attractive urban spaces and neighborhood-specific townscapes.
In this understanding, high-rise buildings and tall buildings take on a variety of roles in the urban fabric. They are not simply an expression of investment, but function as landmarks, identity carriers, social infrastructures, densification elements, and neighborhood centers. It is only through this multiple function that they become integral components of a lively, high-quality townscape – with added value for the surrounding neighborhoods.
