Housing and Working District Lonay-Sud

The Lonay-Sud area, covering approximately 30 hectares, is considered the most important urban expansion project in the Ouest-Lausannois region. Its location directly adjacent to the highway and the Geneva-Lausanne railway line represents both an opportunity (good accessibility, high visibility) and a challenge (noise pollution, barrier effect).

A central element of the concept is the upgrading of the cantonal road into the lifeline and backbone of the neighborhood. It will be transformed into a city avenue. The compact traffic solution allows for generous pedestrian areas with a tree-lined avenue, and a multifunctional lane simplifies crossing the street. The road forms the interface between the residential and workplace quarters. Synergies between the two parts of the neighborhood are deliberately promoted. To support this, the crossing points are emphasized urbanistically. They provide space for typical interface uses (restaurants, neighborhood-oriented businesses). With the “urban showcase” along the highway, noise protection is integrated into the urban design while simultaneously creating a clear and attractive address.

The western part of the neighborhood is directly connected to the existing train stop by a new footbridge. The village access road is redesigned as a neighborhood park, becoming a representative calling card for the municipality. The western extension is spatially and typologically connected with the existing historic village core. The eastern extension blends into the adjacent villa neighborhoods. Dense, ground-bound typologies enable a combination of a green, village-like character with a high building density. The new neighborhood center, featuring a park and a neighborhood plaza, is located at the interface between the neighborhood parts and is embedded in the water landscape.
