Urban space Neue Jonastrasse, Rapperswil–Jona (1st Prize, Competition)
The Neue Jonastrasse forms the backbone between the centers of Rapperswil and Jona. As a straight axis, it is a unique spatial element throughout the entire urban area. The concept aims to strengthen and reinterpret the street’s special morphological structure and its spaciousness. The focus is on widening the street space in favor of public and slow traffic, increasing building density and framing the street space, as well as establishing a continuous tree-lined avenue.
With the new Grünfelsplatz, the Stadtperron as a new western access to Jona station, and two new high-rise buildings, the Jona station quarter is integrated into the urban fabric. The distinctive termination of the connecting axis with the new plaza and high-rises will become the junction point between the axis and the town center.
The concept is intended to enable continuous and needs-based densification or renewal of the existing fabric. To develop the densification potential in coordination with the street redesign, building regulation principles and a multi-stage transformation process are outlined.
