Technikumstrasse, Winterthur

With 21’000 vehicles per day, Technikumstrasse is one of the most important traffic corridors in the city. As the main access route to the train station, it forms the backbone of the entire public transport system. In addition, several regional cycling routes converge along the Bahnhof–Technikum stretch. As part of the city center and home to major public-facing institutions, the street also holds great significance for pedestrians. At the same time, it forms a key urban space at the interface between the old and new town. With many notable buildings (city administration, universities), the street is often referred to as Winterthur’s “ring road.” To ensure that the street does not become a pure traffic artery under increasing pressure, an integrated operational, design, and urban planning concept was developed.

The concept places strong emphasis on creating a sense of address for both the old and new town. With generous forecourts and wide sidewalks, the street becomes a lifeline. The traffic concept is tailored to the urban design conditions—not the other way around, as is often the case. This allows for an urban sense of spaciousness, despite limited space. Simple intersection layouts strengthen cross-connections between the old town and southern districts.
