Redesign Square Im Gut, Zurich
The Im Gut neighborhood, located between Wiedikon and Albisrieden, is set to be significantly densified according to the municipal development plan. This includes the creation of new, attractive open spaces. An important site is the Im Gut intersection, which is currently dominated by car traffic. The redesign aims to transform this area into a fully functional public space, serving as an identity-forming meeting point and an attractive place to spend time within the neighborhood.
The design treats the square as an independent urban space. A 30 km/h speed limit applies within the square area. The traffic flow is very compact, with traffic surfaces reduced by more than half through the project, yet the traffic capacity is maintained. Between the two junctions of Fellenbergstrasse and Schaufelbergerstrasse, a multi-purpose lane facilitates crossing of Gutstrasse. A special feature is the green corridor of the Triemlifussweg, an important and heavily used local recreation route that crosses the square. In the design, this green space is extended up to the street. The planting plan includes vertical layering with both large and small trees, strengthening the landscape character of the green corridor.
Due to Gutstrasse and the green corridor, four connected, paved, furnished, and greened square areas are created. The existing acacia trees remain and are complemented by new trees, forming a loose tree canopy. Regarding usage, the sub-areas respond to location-specific needs. Near the Coop, parking spaces are provided, while the southern part of the square is transformed into a place to linger with a large fountain.
As part of the climate-adapted city initiative, the project has pilot status. Beyond various design aspects (greening, biodiversity, reduction of traffic areas, etc.), the project places strong emphasis on drainage, particularly the “sponge city” concept.
