Development Vision Bakuriani
The popular Georgian winter sports resort of Bakuriani in the Lesser Caucasus suffers from traffic problems and uncoordinated, unattractive urban development. The integral mobility and urban development concept forms the basis for high-quality, sustainable further development with cost-effective infrastructure measures.
The proposal is to create a well-connected, traffic-free space between the train station, the village center, and the main substation of the ski resort. This area, which is heavily frequented by pedestrians, will become a lively meeting place and hub of activity. It also has an important representative function, which is why a high-quality design is planned.
North of the train station and south of the substation of the ski-resort are central parking lots, which can be implemented in several stages and are compactly integrated into new vacation home developments. The train station will be upgraded to a tourist hub (with connections to the bus station, bus parking lot, and bicycle center), strengthening the role of rail as a means of transportation to the resort. Car traffic will be diverted via the already constructed bypass and will no longer pass through the historic village.
A special feature of Bakuriani is its historically significant circular common land. It remains unurbanised and serves as a place for cross-country skiing, playing, and walking. This also makes the value of this green space more visible to local politicians and regional development authorities.
