Lungolago, Lugano

Lugano is located directly on the lake and boasts a long, varied lakeside promenade known as the “Lungolago.” To give this partly neglected and traffic-dominated Lungolago a new identity, a pilot planning project was carried out.

The proposed concept focuses on an integrated, large-scale enhancement of the Lungolago. The various sections are developed based on their existing qualities and identities. Four aspects are always considered together: the water, the public spaces along the lakeshore including traffic areas, the first building depth, and the adjacent neighbourhoods.

The new traffic organisation enables city-compatible traffic management, reducing and relocating traffic flows. The additional space gained allows for the creation of places with high quality of stay and strong connectivity. A continuous, attractive pedestrian network links the entire lakeshore.

At suitable locations, new water access points are created and new connections across the water are enabled. The neighbourhoods are optimally connected to each other and to the Lungolago. At selected sites, new architectural accents are precisely placed.

The phased development towards the desired future vision allows for step-by-step implementation, including measures that can be realized immediately.
