Masterplan Riedmatt-Schöngrund Horw
The Riedmatt–Schöngrund neighborhood in Horw (Lucerne metropolitan area) is centrally located between the train station, the lake, and the town center, and is considered a key area for urban densification in the municipality aimed at creating more affordable housing. However, there are several challenges: the area consists of small parcels, is fully developed, already has a medium to high building density, lies in a low-lying area, and has a very high groundwater level. The master plan therefore does not call for general rezoning, but rather site-specific infill development. Through thoughtful compromises, the plan also enables affordable, climate-resilient, and high-quality development. Along the Dorfbach, for example, dense yet small-scale development with a compact footprint is planned, preserving generous infiltration areas. Targeted densification is planned along the cantonal road to create an urban edge with mixed-use development. Neighborhood garages are planned in the stepped layout along the road, keeping the inner area of the neighborhood car-free. This avoids the need for expensive underground garages and creates attractive green spaces in the immediate residential environment.
