New Old Town Arbon
Since the opening of the town center bypass, the old town of Arbon has seen a significant reduction in transit traffic. The ‘New Old Town Arbon’ project is using this reduction in traffic to enhance the area as a whole.
On the one hand, this involves the traffic regime and the structuring of uses throughout the old town area. For example, T20 (shared space) applies throughout the old town. Car parks are located on the western and eastern edges of the old town, which are easily accessible from all directions via the bypass. This prevents transit car traffic. At the same time, it is proposed to concentrate the uses of the centre in the immediate vicinity of the five closely linked town squares (Marktplatz, Fischmarktplatz, Kirchplatz, Storchenplatz and Schlossplatz) in order to exploit synergies and pedestrian traffic frequencies. Finally, the lake shore will also be better connected to the old town, strengthening the interaction between the two areas, especially in summer.
On the other hand, it is about redesigning the open spaces. This supports the traffic regime and the usage structure, but also contributes to the identity and appreciation of the medieval character of the old town. Historically representative locations – such as the Römerhof – are highlighted by extensive paving. The urban space is designed from façade to façade, taking into account the various uses: for example, there are flexible, wide front areas for ground floor uses, as well as areas for deliveries and short-term parking. A central theme is the quality of stay and a pleasant urban climate. There is extensive greening, unsealed surfaces and plenty of seating.
