Main Train Station Basel

The expansion of Basel railway station will lead to changing and increasing pedestrian flows, as well as a shift of train stops and passenger access points to the north and west. By 2050, passenger numbers are expected to double compared to today. Urban space, traffic routing, and the tram network must be adapted accordingly – to provide high-quality public spaces, support sustainable and climate-resilient urban development, and ensure attractive routes to and beyond the station.

A central issue is the relief of Centralbahnplatz and the upgrading of Markthallenplatz as a second, fully functional station square and interface between the station and the city center. However, these two station squares are not only transit spaces for commuters, but also important public spaces—serving surrounding uses, the inner city, and the broader population. With their many representative building façades, these squares also serve as key identity-defining elements.

To ensure an efficient traffic and spatial system for the future, a reallocation of space is necessary—away from traffic lanes and towards more circulation space for pedestrians, heat-reducing surfaces, shade-providing trees, and attractive public areas, as well as well-connected networks for public transport and bicycle traffic.
