New Station District Brugg-Windisch

The Brugg railway station is an important regional multimodal transport hub. It is located between the two municipalities of Brugg and Windisch and forms the “new center” of the entire region. Due to its strategic location, the station area is considered an important cantonal development area for living and working.

The concept proposes the development of a dense, mixed-use, urban residential and commercial district on the Windisch side. In addition, there is a differentiated approach to the existing, interconnected industrial halls of Kabelwerke Brugg. The oldest halls will be converted into an educational and cultural hub (FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts) with a supra-regional appeal. The result will be a striking building block, spatially and architecturally staged by its location between the station square and the new urban park.

The halls at the station will only be partially converted or will remain as relics in the public space as identity carriers. The neighborhood structure follows the floor plans of the industrial halls, which means that the partially new halls can be preserved for a long time to come.

The development is based on a coherent, flexible, robust open space framework. Three squares structure the space. There is the urban, heavily frequented station square as part of the central axis between Brugg and Windisch. It is linked to the new landscaped Kabelwerkplatz via the track promenade with bus station, as the representative main address of the transformation area. Further south is Bruneggpark, the green center of the future residential quarters. With the new traffic management system, Brugg's station square will also be completely free of traffic (pedestrian traffic only), creating a fully-fledged center and station square with many design possibilities.
