Masterplan Winterthur Süd
As is often the case with large, complex transportation projects: planning takes years, attractive plans are developed, but with every new variant, more problems arise. Until recently, the situation in Winterthur South seemed hopeless. Architects forget about traffic and landscape, traffic engineers ignore the established urban fabric, and in matters of open space, courage is lacking. Only with our masterplan, favorable conditions and feasible solutions habe been created for a sustainable and qualitative urban development.
The masterplan outlines the path for large-scale upgrading of this strategically important part of the city. Unlike all previous plans, this masterplan prioritised an integrated, holistic vision and the creation of synergies. It proposes placing the A1 motorway in a tunnel between Steig and Nägelsee. This section includes both heritage-protected residential neighbourhoods and major development potentials. Furthermore, significant ecological enhancements are possible here, such as the continuous daylighting of the Töss river (Töss Park) and the interconnection of forested areas.
The design of the motorway connection with two half interchanges enables targeted traffic routing and therefore a stronger bypassing effect. Zürcherstrasse is transformed into an urban boulevard for all modes of transport. It becomes a prestigious address and attractive public space with tree-lined avenues. The sequence of intersections allows precise traffic control while creating a rhythm of centres and dividing the road into distinct sections.
By routing the motorway through a tunnel, new connections emerge near the southern portal. A new suburban train station is therefore proposed at this location. The station becomes a natural interface between neighbourhoods, offering optimal connectivity between transport networks (bus lines, bike routes).
It is precisely the combination of motorway tunnel, half interchanges, train station, and Töss Park that forms the foundation for a high-quality, diverse, and future-oriented development of the district.
