Mobility and Urbanism Lviv
The city of Lviv is an important economic center with a population of around 800,000. It is experiencing strong growth, which is also linked to the large number of refugees from the Russian war. Precise coordination between urban development and mobility plays a significant role in ensuring high-quality and affordable development. The integrated urban development and mobility concept (SUMP: Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan) forms the central basis for this.
The basic idea is to promote efficient, space-saving, sustainable transport systems that add value to urban development. The focus is therefore on strengthening the radial urban axes. Along these axes, qualitative densification and mixed use are planned. This densification will be combined with efficient, structuring public transport systems (trams, trolleybuses, buses on dedicated lanes) and an upgrade of street spaces (with greenery, wide pedestrian areas, bicycle paths). At the same time, the long-neglected rail network will also be upgraded. New sub-centers will be created at the intersections of trams and trains, where important facilities will be concentrated.
Existing tangential connections around the city center will be redesigned as attractive ring boulevards. This will relieve traffic congestion in the city center and enable compact mixed-traffic solutions in the narrow, central, historic main streets. Logistics and economic development are important issues. The concept envisages differentiated development of employment areas in accordance with the ABC methodology. This will create locations with different profiles that are tailored to the micro-location (right use in the right place).
Language skills and the close, constructive cooperation with local stakeholders ultimately played a major role in anchoring and gaining acceptance for the project (among population and authorities).
